Work packages

The project FOXES is organized into eight Work Packages (WPs); work package WP1 deals with the ethic requirements, WP2 with the administration of the project, and WP8 with the exploitation and dissemination of the project results. The other WPs are dedicated to technical work. Work packages WP3, WP4 and WP5 are directly related to the design, development and realisation of the Power Cube, while WP6 is dedicated to the IoT Bundle. Integration and testing is performed in WP7.

WP 1 – Ethics Requirements

Lead beneficiary:Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH (MCL)
Contributors:all partners
Tasks:To ensure FOXES’ compliance to EU ethical guidelines, especially for what concerns the protection of personal data during dissemination/exploitation activities.

WP 2 – Project management

Lead beneficiary:Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH (MCL)
Contributors:all partners
Tasks:Administrative and financial management.
Monitoring of project progress and risk management.
Coordination of knowledge management and IP-related activities.

WP 3 – Design and fabrication of the perovskite solar cell

Lead beneficiary:Bergische Universität Wuppertal (BUW)
Contributors:BUW, AMO GmbH, UNINOVA, Universitat de Barcelona
Objectives:Identification of two Pb-free photo-active materials for efficient Pb-free photovoltaic solar cells (PSCs); (Targeted power conversion efficiency (PCE): Sn-based PCE > 10%, Pb- and Sn-free PCE >5%).
Development of optimum and chemically benign interface charge transport materials (metal-oxides / 2D materials).
Pb-free multi-junction (tandem) PSC.
Mini-module 2×2 cm2 with voltage > 4 V; lifetime > 1000 h.

WP 4 – Design and fabrication of the capacitor

Lead beneficiary:Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH (MCL)
Contributors:MCL, UNINOVA, Universitat de Barcelona
Objectives:Realisation of a two-layer dielectric capacitor based on lead-free BaTiO3 solid solutions with 2 x 2 cm2 footprint and 1 μm-thick dielectric layers.
Capacitor structuring and bonding, facilitating subsequent integration within FOXES Power Cube.
Testing of the capacitor to ensure targeted energy density, stored energy amount and time constant.

WP 5 – Design and fabrication of electronics

Lead beneficiary:UNINOVA
Contributors:UNINOVA, Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH, Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Universitat de Barcelona
Objectives:To build the electronics needed to control the energy delivered by FOXES Power Cube. The proposed energy management circuit will provide a constant load voltage independently of the source voltage fluctuations and power required by the load circuit

WP 6 – Design and fabrication of the sensor node

Lead beneficiary:Universitat de Barcelona (UB)
Contributors:UB, Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH, UNINOVA
Objectives:Development of an IoT bundle compatible with FOXES Power Cube, with wireless gas sensor functionality towards NO2 and O3.
The IoT bundle will include (a) a gas sensing functionality, (b) an LED actuator to operate the sensor, (c) control, processing, signal conditioning and acquisition electronics, (d) power management and (e) wireless
communications.
The gas sensor element will require less than 10 μW, the IoT Bundle will require less than 50 μW.

WP 7 – Power Cube integration, complete system assembly and testing

Lead beneficiary:Universitat de Barcelona (UB)
Contributors:all partners
Objectives:Formation of the energy management circuit (EMC) on top of the thin film capacitor (TFC) and realisation of the electric connections. Formation of the photovoltaic solar cell (PSC) on top of the EMC-TFC.
Integration of FOXES Power Cube an the IoT bundle to achieve a functional, compact FOXES demonstrator, using simple and scalable assembly methods. Evaluation of the functionality of the final FOXES demonstrator, regarding
mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance, and in terms of continuous auto-powered wireless operation and gas detection.
Demonstration of the usefulness of FOXES approach in an in-field urban deployment.

WP 8 – Exploitation and dissemination

Lead beneficiary:AMO GmbH
Contributors:all partners
Objectives:Dissemination to the general public.
Academic dissemination.
Dissemination towards industry.
Exploitation focused on strengthening European research, science and industry.
